Before I continue, let’s differentiate between Altcoins and Tokens.

Altcoins and tokens

Altcoins are coins that were considered alternatives to bitcoin which means every other cryptocurrency apart from bitcoin.

Bitcoin being the first cryptocurrency maintains its name while every other cryptocurrencies are regarded as alternatives to bitcoin.

Altcoin was coined after the launch of different cryptocurrencies such as the Namecoin, Litecoin which were hard-forked from bitcoin blockchain to solve transaction fee and finality issues.

Tokens, under general classification are also classified as altcoin but with a difference.

Tokens are digital representations of a particular asset or utility on a blockchain.

Altcoins when compared to tokens are different because tokens are built on an existing blockchain.

Sometimes they are referred to as Layer-2 coins while any cryptocurrency with its own blockchain other than bitcoin falls under altcoin.

Ether is the native coin of Ethereum blockchain while every other cryptocurrency built on the Ethereum blockchain are tokens.
