Polygon launched web3 “.polygon” domain in partnership with Unstoppable domain.
By using the service, users will be able to access Web3 applications, use human-readable wallet addresses, and build decentralized websites.
Over 180 million people and 40,000 services in the Polygon blockchain ecosystem will have access to the service.
Polygon is used by Unstoppable Domains to create decentralized domains with no gas costs while approximately 2.7 million domains have been registered on the Polygon blockchain to date.
Users will be able to build digital identities that are interoperable with 750 applications, games, and metaverse platforms by using “.polygon” domains.
This can be used to log into online applications like decentralized websites and cryptocurrency wallet addresses.
Also, users can also establish profiles on Unstoppable Domains that can be linked to social media sites and serve as a digital identity on various Web3 platforms and networks.
Sanket Shah, vice president of business development at Polygon Labs, made the following statement about the significance of enabling user-owned digital identity for Polygon users:
“Web3 domains will give our community a digital identity that they fully own, so they can log into dApps without giving away their personal information and transact crypto without lengthy wallet addresses.”
Decentralized Name Services
During the past year, decentralized name services like Unstoppable Domains and Ethereum Name Service (ENS) have grown in popularity due to the significant increase in domain registrations.
In August 2020, Coinbase partnered with Unstoppable Domains to offer payments with domain handles rather than cryptographic addresses.
In an effort to replace alpha-numeric wallet addresses with human-readable alternatives, Coinbase then collaborated with ENS in September 2022 to offer customers free “name.cb.id” usernames.
